Abstract

This paper studies the effects of migration and cultural factors over household basic food consumption in the native agricultural migrant community of San Miguel Coatlán located in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. The paper estimates a cross section econometric model to test the effect of monetary variables and cultural variables over the basic food consumption in the community using 103 households’ basic food consumption surveys. These households represent 37 per cent of the community households’ total. The findings show the influence of various forms of income and cultural variables on the basic consumption behavior in the community.
